Sprouting

Hey BA!

This month’s quick tip is to look for the word “sprouted” when buying seeds and whole grains at the store. Here’s why -

Naturally occurring in many foods are compounds called anti-nutrients. Anti-nutrients impair digestion by binding to various minerals and preventing their absorption into the bloodstream. One anti-nutrient in particular, phytate, is found in whole grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes. Therefore, while these foods are still nutritionally beneficial raw, you are not able to fully receive all the health benefits they contain.

Sprouting, however, neutralizes the phytic acid. This unlocks the minerals and enables them to be absorbed and utilized by the body. These foods are also easier to digest when sprouted, which is great for those who experience impaired digestion or simply want to improve their gut health.

While it’s ideal to consume all these foods sprouted, sprouted seeds and whole grains are the most readily available at the grocery store. Sometimes when it comes to nutrition, you have to pick your battles and find a realistic approach to eating. Therefore, I recommend starting with seeds and whole grains. Below is a list of my favorite brands for some of these items.

  • Ezekial sprouted whole grain bread

  • One Degree Organic Foods sprouted oatmeal

  • Go Raw sprouted pumpkin and sunflower seeds

  • TruRoots sprouted quinoa

Try them out and let me know what you think!
